Tour Program

  • 1. Day

For your Sintra & Cascais Day Tour From Lisbon , make your way to Restauradores Square to meet your guide. Long the home of Portugal’s monarchs, Sintra is a magnificent town of marvelous historic mansions, all set against a backdrop of lush hills.

Feel like royalty as you enter romantic Pena National Palace, built by the artistic and intellectual king Fernando II (1816-1885), and perched atop Sintra Mountain. This mountain range (Serre Sintra) has long been associated with myths and legends. It was said that Diana, the Greek goddess of hunting, used the mountains as her retreat, and so the area was named for her. To the Romans, she was known as Cynthia, which became Çintra or Sintra.

Do not miss The Great Triton, the guardian of the palace, commemorated in Manueline (late Gothic) and mythology. From the Terrace of the Arches you’ll see wonderful views of the palaces of Montserrate, Seteais (now a luxury hotel) and Quinta da Regaleira, with its gorgeous gardens.

Inside the Palace, several treats are in store, such as the bedrooms of the King and Queen, the Chapel of Saint Jerónimo, the Arab Room, the Queen’s Terrace, the Indian Room and the Nobles’ Room.

At the lunch break in old Sintra, give in to temptation and taste the delicious pastries from the villages of Travesseiro and Queijada (payable direct).

Stunning scenery awaits at Roca Cape cliffs, the western most point of Europe, “where the earth ends and the sea begins…’’ (Luíz Vaz de Camões). See the powerful waves of the fashionable Guincho beach, a paradise for surfers, windsurfers and kite-surfers. Then take a scenic drive along the Atlantic coast, passing Boca do Inferno (Hell’s Mouth) (No stoppage).

At glamorous Cascais, Portugal’s original tourist resort, you can enjoy a walk along the bay. See the grand villas, hotels and restaurants built for the very rich at the start of the 20th century.

On the drive back to Lisbon, you’ll pass the town of Estoril, which was inhabited by the Phoenicians, Romans and Arabs and has inherited a rich cultural legacy of architecture, habits and customs.

Your tour ends in Restauradores Square and you should make your own arrangements for returning to your accommodation.
